Communication

Degree

Bachelor of Arts, Major, Minor

As students of communication, we study messages. Specifically, we examine the verbal and nonverbal messages that people exchange in various settings. These contexts include organizations, families, relationships, healthcare settings, and the media. Though we have communicated our entire lives, it is less common for us to think about how we communicate, why we communicate, and the effects of our communication. Exploring the how, the why, and the effects of messages will be the main theme of your coursework at Fairfield.

Prepare for a professional career with coursework driven by advanced communication research. You will develop evidence-based recommendations for practice and explore how communication impacts various aspects of life. Our diverse faculty will guide you through research that shapes your understanding of the field.

Throughout the program, you'll gain critical oral and written communication skills, as well as enhance your critical thinking and analytical reasoning. You’ll also explore the vital role communication plays in shaping ideas, relationships, communities, and identities, applying communication theories to your everyday experiences.

Global Awareness and Study Abroad

Develop a global perspective by learning about the role of communication in different cultures. The program encourages you to pursue study abroad opportunities, enhancing your education and preparing you for communication in a globalized world.

Accelerated BA/MA Program

The College of Arts and Sciences’ accelerated BA/MA in Communication program gives qualified undergraduate students the opportunity to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in as few as five years. This accelerated pathway allows undergraduate students to transition directly into the communication master’s program upon graduation, and earn a graduate degree in less time and at potentially less cost than when done separately. Students who chose to pursue this pathway will work with their undergraduate advisor to follow a specific sequence of study before matriculating as a graduate student and completing their master’s degree.

Communication & Public Relations Internships

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ is dedicated to fostering the creative and intellectual growth of communication and public relations majors by combining rigorous academic study with practical experience. Through internships, students can apply classroom theories, explore career opportunities, and enhance their resumes with distinctive learning experiences. Proximity to New York City and prestigious companies in Southwest Connecticut offers students a unique opportunity to bridge classroom learning with real-world work environments.

These internships provide valuable insights into specific areas of the communication field, with many students discovering career paths or gaining clarity on fields they may not wish to pursue. Back on campus, workshops and academic assignments complement the internship experience, ensuring students gain the most from their hands-on learning.

Semester Internships

Fairfield's proximity to New York City, as well as the availability of transportation alternatives to get there, such as the Metro-North Commuter train, make it possible for our internship program to offer a wide variety of options and experiences for students.

Getting Involved

Communication and PR majors are inherently social, so Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆis proud to offer a host of opportunities to get involved with your faculty and fellow majors both face-to-face and virtually.

Comm.Unity is a student organization that serves to orient interested students to career opportunities in the Communication field. The club sponsors guest lectures from alumni and other professionals, as well as field trips, socials, and colloquia. Recent field trips have included visits to ESPN and other national television networks, and attendance at tapings of television talk shows. Club officers and members engage in fundraising activities, organize activity fairs, schedule meetings, and run yearly elections. Students elect club officers every spring, who set the agenda for the following year.

Active participation in Comm.Unity gives students the opportunity to get to know departmental faculty members outside of the classroom environment, develop a sense of community with other communication majors, and learn more about careers and internship opportunities. For information about Comm.Unity, contact Professor Colleen Arendt at carendt@fairfield.edu.

Lambda Pi Eta is the internationally recognized honor society for students and scholars in the fields of communication studies, rhetoric, and speech. Students who maintain a high grade point average, overall and in their major, will be invited by the department faculty to be inducted into Lambda Pi Eta during their senior year. Involvement in this honor society increases opportunities for individual potential and advancement, for example, through developing leadership skills, networking with international members, and contact with professional organizations. Membership in Lambda Pi Eta is also impressive on graduate school applications.

Active participation in Lambda Pi Eta gives students the opportunity to work more closely with department faculty members outside of the classroom setting. Students plan events, sponsor guest speakers, organize field trips, and other activities. Students may also choose to participate in national or regional communication conferences through the presentation of research and attendance at panel discussions. For information about Lambda Pi Eta, contact Professor Sallyanne Ryan at sryan@fairfield.edu.
