Stags Beat Hobart, Face Bellarmine on Saturday
Rookie TJ Neubauer scored a career-high four goals to lead the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ men's lacrosse team to a 13-10 win over Hobart College in ECAC Lacrosse League action in Geneva, N.Y. The Stags improve to 6-3 on the year and 2-0 in conference action, while the Statesmen fall to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Taylor Vanderbeek tied the game for the sixth time to bring the Statesmen even, 9-9, with 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Stags however responded, winning the ensuing face-off and on the third shot of the possession had Colin McLinden find the net for the go-ahead goal, 10-9. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆwon the opening face-off of the fourth quarter, and after both teams turned the ball over, Neubauer gave the Stags a two-goal lead, 11-9, with his third of the game, unassisted at the 13:15 mark.
Hobart won the next face-off and drew within a tally, 11-10, 30 seconds later on a Jake Silberlicht tally, but again Neubauer answered. Just 3:25 later the rookie netted a pass from Sam Snow to give Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆa 12-10 advantage. Tristan Sperry completed his hat trick, and the scoring for the game, with an unassisted goal with 3:37 to play.
Seven different Stags found the back of the net in the victory, paced by four from Neubauer, three from Sperry and a pair from McLinden. Snow did not score but had two assists in the Stags victory. Jordan Greenfield, Nick Guida and Drew Federico all had two points with a goal and an assist in the game.
Michael Roe went 12-24 at the face-off X, a season-high, and picked up a season-high seven ground balls. Charles Sipe was 12-23 for the Statesmen to go along with four ground balls.
Jack Murphy stopped seven shots in earning the win for the Stags. He also had two ground balls and caused a turnover. Peter Zonino had seven saves for the Statesmen with two ground balls in a losing effort.
Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆcaused seven turnovers, with seven different players recording one in the win, as both teams committed five turnovers. The Stags had a 33-28 advantage in shots on the game, and Hobart had a 35-34 edge in ground balls.
McLinden wasted little time getting the Stags on the board, as he netted his seventh of the year just 55 seconds into the game. The Stags would race to a 5-2 lead when Sperry capped a four goal run with his first of the game at the 11:12 mark of the second-quarter. Hobart five of the next six goals, with Alex Love netting his second of the run with 29 seconds left in the half to tie the score 6-6.
Love, who led the Statesmen with four goals, started the second-half with his third consecutive goal, 2:06 into the third, to give Hobart a 7-6 lead. Neubauer brought the Stags event with his third of the game at the 10:23 mark of the period to tie the game for the fourth time, 7-7. Sperry followed at 8:35, netting a pass from Guida to give Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆan 8-7 advantage. Derek Akner tied the game 5:03 later, 8-8, a tie the lasted just 47 seconds until Drew Federico found the back of the net for the Stags.
The Stags return home on Saturday, March 30 when ECAC foe Bellarmine visits Alumni Field. That game is set for noon.
