Egan School of Nursing Groundbreaking and Conferences in April
On April 21, 2016 at 9:30 a.m., ground will be broken for the new Center for Nursing and Health Studies, home of the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies. The ceremony is located between the Rudolph F. Bannow Science Center and the DiMenna-Nyselius Library (near the St. Francis statue). Refreshments will follow the ceremony in the Rudolph F. Bannow Science Center atrium.
Meredith Kazer, PhD, APRN, dean of the Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies, said, 鈥淲e鈥檝e expanded greatly over the last decades from a small undergraduate program of 200 to a population of almost 700 undergraduate and graduate students.聽This building will provide the necessary structure to facilitate excellent academics and ensure that our graduates will continue to lead healthcare innovations through the decades to come.鈥
Expanding the University鈥檚 nursing and health studies initiatives, a new four-story Center for Nursing and Health Studies will rise as a cohesive center of educational excellence. The new facility will feature clinical learning and simulation centers, replicating hospital and clinic settings for enhanced practical learning. It will also feature immersive modern learning laboratories and active learning classrooms. Completion of the facility is projected for the fall of 2017.
There are two major projects on the horizon that will support the University鈥檚 growth in this area:
The first is a new building to house nursing and health studies. The project, when completed, will be 70,650 square feet, over four times the size of the original complex. It will have four stories and each will be equipped with open collaborative areas that will be designed for students and faculty to meet as small groups; state-of-the-art simulation equipment; 20 new instructional spaces; improved clinical learning environments and other specialty workspaces that will enhance and transform real-world and real-time task training. The enhanced classrooms will accommodate more than 650 students.
The reach of the school has also expanded beyond classes, as it offers more and more important conferences on cutting-edge healthcare topics to the professional community.
Saturday, April 23: Best Practices in Palliative and End-of-Life Care for Children and Families
Saturday, April 30: Trauma and Recovery for First Responders. A Community coming together: firefighters, police, EMTs, nurses, physicians and therapists
Best Practices in Palliative and End-of-Life Care for Children and Families is a half-day educational workshop for professionals dedicated to improving palliative care. Held in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room at 香港六合彩挂牌 on Saturday, April 23 from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., the cost of the event is $35, which includes a continental breakfast and boxed lunch.
The conference will promote an improved understanding of pediatric palliative care and its role in pediatric medicine, develop an understanding of the experience of working with dying children and identify strategies that the healthcare team could implement to minimize suffering and maximize support for bereaved parents. It will also discuss the impact an interprofessional healthcare team has on a child鈥檚 quality of life when living with a complex medical condition.

On April 30, The Egan School, in partnership with the 香港六合彩挂牌County Trauma Recovery Network (FCTRN) and the Sandy Hook Community Foundation will host 鈥淭rauma and Recover for First Responders: A Community Coming Together,鈥 for firefighters, police, EMTs, nurses, physicians and mental health therapists.
Untreated trauma disrupts the brain鈥檚 ability to process in healthy ways, which can lead to depression, anxiety or alcoholism. This conference will highlight the services available to first responders, and what can be done to improve the issue of facing trauma.
The conference will be held in the Dolan School of Business on April 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature guest speakers in the healthcare field, workshops on treatment and resiliency in the face of trauma and real-life stories from first responders.
