How to Succeed in Finance Panel, Jan. 26

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ’s Dolan School of Business will welcome four alumni to campus on January 26, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room to speak to students about how to succeed in finance.

The evening is part of the Dolan School’s Professional Development Series which is aimed at enhancing the career readiness of students. Dr. John McDermott, associate professor of finance, will moderate the evening.

Dr. McDermott will be joined on stage by Stephen Barrett ’98, managing director at JP Morgan Chase, Chuck Burke ’01, executive director at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, Elizabeth Kontomerkos ’93, senior vice president at Bank of America and Tom Petrone ’76, director of capital markets at Dynasty Financial Partners.

Dr. McDermott will engage the panel in conversation about their current careers in finance, the challenges and lessons they’ve learned along the way, what makes young employees at their firm successful and more. " This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to learn from the varied experiences of four of our most successful graduates,” Dr. McDermott said.

Alumni panelists:

Stephen Barrett ’98, Managing Director, JP Morgan Chase
Stephen (Steve) Barrett has 15 years of financial services experience and was named the No. 1 Advisor across the nation in OnWallStreet Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2015. Steve is currently a managing director and a financial advisor with J.P. Morgan Securities, the wealth management division of J.P. Morgan. He designs and manages tailored equity and equity derivative investment portfolios for high-net-worth individuals, family offices and institutions. Beginning his career at Dean Witter (now Morgan Stanley), Barrett then moved to Jennison Associates. He joined Bear Stearns, J.P. Morgan Securities’ predecessor firm in 2005, and transitioned to his present role in 2008. Barrett grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ in 1998 with a B.S. degree and a double major in finance and international business. He also earned an MBA degree from Fordham University.

Chuck Burke ’01, Executive Director, Morgan Stanley Investment Management
Chuck Burke is co-head of Institutional Investor Coverage for Merchant Banking & Real Estate Investing, Morgan Stanley’s direct private investing business. He is responsible for leading capital-raising efforts globally in conjunction with MB & REI’s investment teams. His specific responsibilities include development and execution of product marketing strategies, ongoing enhancement of MB & REI’s global distribution capabilities and management of key relationships with internal and third party distribution partners in major markets around the world. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 2011, Burke worked at Merrill Lynch and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he spent ten years in a variety of roles in corporate banking and risk management. Burke graduated with a B.A. in economics from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ in 2001.

 

 

Elizabeth Kontomerkos ’93, Senior Vice President, Bank of America
Elizabeth Kontomerkos is a senior vice president in Bank of America’s Global Commercial Banking division. Kontomerkos leads a team of financial specialists who work with the Bank’s commercial clients to understand their business and proactively provide relevant insights and integrated solutions that help meet their business objectives. Kontomerkos has been in banking for almost 20 years, the last 11 years with Bank of America. Prior to her work in the financial services industry, Kontomerkos worked in the fields of accounting and finance for several publically traded companies. She graduated with a B.A. in accounting and finance from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ in 1993 and earned an MBA from Tulane University.

 

 

Thomas A. Petrone ’76, Director of Capital Markets, Dynasty Financial Partners
Thomas (Tom) A. Petrone has over 30 years of experience in the capital markets business and joined Dynasty Financial Partners in September 2013 as the Director of Capital Markets. Prior to joining Dynasty, Petrone was the managing director responsible for the capital markets franchise within the Citi Private Bank in North America. This included all client related securities transaction and sales activity (equities, fixed income, derivatives, and currencies) on the bank and broker dealer platforms. Before his assignment in the Citi Private Bank, Petrone spent his career in the institutional equity derivatives business at Citigroup and its prior organizations. Petrone held many managing director level leadership roles within the global equity derivatives organization including co-head of the U.S. equity derivatives franchise. This encompassed all trading, sales and structuring activity for institutional, corporate and private clients of Citigroup. Petrone served on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Board of Options Exchange. He is a 1976 graduate of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ.
