Paul F. Lakeland, PhD, Begins Term as President of Catholic Theological Society of America

The CTSA is the largest professional society of theologians in the world.

Author and theologian Paul F. Lakeland, PhD, became the president of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA) in June. Before beginning his presidential term, Dr. Lakeland served as president-elect for one year beginning in June 2017, after serving as vice president. In June 2019, he will become past president for a final year in the four-year presidential line.

Two of Dr. Lakeland's esteemed colleagues have also served as president of the CTSA. Professor of religious studies John Thiel was president of the CTSA from 2011 to 2012. Rev. Michael Fahey, S.J., former Scholar in Residence at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ, was president from 1983 to 1984.

Dr. Lakeland is the Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J., Chair of Catholic Studies and the director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ. He teaches courses on ecclesiology, religion and culture, and religion and literature. He is also a regular contributor to the Catholic journal Commonweal. An author of numerous scholarly articles and 10 books, his most recent, The Wounded Angel (Liturgical Press 2017) was awarded the 2017 Best Book Published in Theology, by the College Theology Society. Dr. Lakeland has also been a recipient of several Catholic Press Association awards, earning Best Book in Theology for his work, The Liberation of the Laity.He received Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ’s Robert E. Wall Faculty Research Award for the 2015-16 academic year.

The CTSA, founded in 1946, is the principal association of Catholic theologians in North America and promotes theological research in the Roman Catholic tradition that is attentive to contemporary problems faced by the Church and the world. The Society has a membership of more than 1300, making it the largest professional society of theologians in the world. Active members of the Society hold doctorates in theology or a related discipline.
