In honor of National Library Week, the library will showcase newly acquired Oculus Rift technology.
On Wednesday, April 10 the DiMenna-Nyselius Library will offer Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to drop by from 2 – 5 p.m. and explore the expanding universe of virtual reality (VR) technology. Although typically associated with gaming, VR also offers educational experiences for a wide variety of subjects including health care, history, studio arts, and engineering.
The is built into the practice presentation/video conference room on the upper level of the building in room 302. The space features Oculus Rift technology and comes equipped with a growing list of VR experiences. Oculus Rift boasts being the best virtual reality experience on the market and is said to transport users 100 percent into the “world” that they are visiting. At present, only one person at a time can use the equipment, however the experience can be projected so friends and classmates can participate alongside the user.
The open house event will also feature important information on how to utilize the virtual reality room, including how to book the viewing room, how to use the equipment correctly, and which software “experiences” are currently available. Faculty can also speak to library staff about integrating VR into their curriculum.
Just recently the DiMenna Nyselius Library acquired the new Rome Reborn virtual reality app which allows classical studies, history, and art history students to experience ancient Rome as it appeared in antiquity. The simulation app represents Rome from 700 BCE to 500 CE and offers a bird’s eye view of the ancient city, as well as highly detailed features for some of the famous landmark buildings.
