Student employees are essential to the successful implementation of conferences and events on campus as well as the management of the Barone Campus Center. The Office of Conference & Event Management hires a number of student staff members throughout the summer and academic year. Ranging in scope and responsibilities, student positions in Conference & Event Management aim to provide not just a paycheck, but also to prepare you to be work ready and life ready.

Frequently Asked Questions - Academic Year Positions

The Building Manager serves as the resource and point person for all events in the Barone Campus Center, Gonzaga Auditorium, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ Conference Center, and Dolan School of Business’ Event Hall. The Building Manager is a supportive role to all campus partner events, as well as external client events to the university.

The Building Manager (BMs) is responsible for the operation support of the Barone Campus Center as well as the satellite facilities associated with it. Some duties include:

Event preparation
Media support
Operational management
Maintenance support
Guest and customer support.
Maintaining inventory of media equipment
Ability to work independently and with others.
Dependable and ability to follow-through with tasks.
Possess and display attention to detail in his or her day-to-day work.
Effective communication skills.
Willingness to work and learn.
Building Manager duties also include aspects of prepping campus facilities for visitors:

Preparing check in/check out materials for conference guests
Staffing check in/check out desks for visitors
Serving as campus and community resources for guests
Monitoring and documenting University supplies and equipment
Assisting with the implementation of events on campus
Assisting with general administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Office of Conference & Event Management
Thorough understanding of the functioning basics behind the operations of the Barone Campus Center and Gonzaga Auditorium specifically the Information Desk, Game Area, and Conference & Events needs.

The manager must have the ability and willingness to work weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

There are two mandatory training sessions at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. Shifts begin when the school year begins, so it is necessary to begin training prior to the academic year.

Building Managers will have one-three shifts a week, and there is a semester long rotation of weekend closing shifts. Building Managers can expect to have at least one or two closing shifts a semester.

 

Compensation for Building Managers includes hourly wages of $14.00/hour. Building Manager Supervisors receive a higher pay rate per hour, as do returning Building Managers.

You must be a current Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ student, in good academic standing and good judicial standing. You must be planning to enroll in classes at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ for the following semester. Exceptional customer service; strong communication skills; attention to detail; self-tasking; assertive; resourceful; in-depth knowledge of campus resources; ability to follow and enforce policies; ability to lift up to 50 lbs; must be willing to maintain a professional appearance.

 

As an Office Assistant, your main goal is to support and aid the Office of Conference & Event Management professional staff in their daily tasks to help the office run more efficiently.

 

Due to the eclectic nature of our office, Office Assistant tasks vary from shift to shift. We engage with a wide variety of people from external clients looking to rent space on campus, students looking to plan events, to parents, faculty, and staff. Duties can involve staffing the front reception desk, approving and hanging up flyers in the Barone Campus Center, assisting with the maintenance of our University transportation fleet, and more!

 

Compensation for Office Assistants includes hourly wages of $14.00/hour.

Office Assistants work 1-hour shifts Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. You can expect to work 4-8 hours per week, with the opportunity to pick up more shifts as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions - Summer Positions

When the academic year comes to a close, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ opens its residence halls and facilities to many different types of groups including Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆstudents, visiting students from other universities, incoming freshmen during orientation, and a wide variety of camps and conferences. Our facilities are conveniently located and affordable. We host groups of up to about 600 attendees and can accommodate guests for one night or several weeks/months.

Conference Assistants (CAs) will work with the Office of Conference & Event Management to help in all aspects of summer conference preparation and execution. Some duties include:

Prepping residence halls for visitors
Preparing check in/check out materials for conference guests
Preparing keys and ID cards for visitors
Staffing check in/check out desks for visitors
Serving as campus and community resources for guests
Serving as a driver for our morning and evening shuttle to the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆtrain station
Monitoring and documenting lost keys and ID cards
Performing rounds of campus buildings used for summer programs
Providing service items such as irons/ironing boards, linens, etc. to customers
Assisting with the implementation of events on campus
Participate in nightly on-call rotation for after-hours event and guest support
Plan and implement summer programming
Manage, grow, and post to our office social media channels
Assisting with general administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Office of Conference & Event Management Conference Assistants
Other duties as assigned

Conference Assistant Supervisors have additional roles and responsibilities including the following:

Directly or indirectly managing CA staff in regards to specific tasks
Additional administrative responsibilities
Coordinate preparation, setup, and take-down of specific events
Meet regularly with Conference & Event Management professional staff and act as liaison between pro-staff and CA staff
Assist in coordinating training for CA staff
Deal with team issues affecting CA staff
Other duties as assigned


You must be a current Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ student who is available to reside on campus during the dates of the position. You must be planning to enroll in classes at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ for the following fall semester. You must have full availability (35-40 hours a week), flexibility for the summer, and a valid driver's license. All Summer Conference Assistants are provided with on campus housing in an apartment or townhouse with 4-8 students. Conference Assistants will have the opportunity to select their summer roommates if they have a preference. It is a requirement of the position that the Conference Assistants live on campus for a number of purposes, including late-night work assignments, emergency response, and University presence. The same Residence Life policies outlined in the Student Handbook governing academic year residents apply to Conference Assistants. All Conference Assistants are expected to abide by all policies and help enforce them.

There is a mandatory training period in late April/early May for this position. The start date of this position is immediately at the end of the school year, so it is necessary to begin training prior to the end of the academic year. This training will be paid and we will work to find times that work for all new hires.

Schedules vary based on weekly conference needs. Full time work is considered up to 40 hours per week. You should expect a rotating weekly schedule. Early mornings, evenings, and weekends should be expected and are scheduled on a rotating basis. Time off is scheduled at the beginning of the summer and is granted on a first-request basis.

Compensation for Summer Conference Assistants includes hourly wages of $15.00/hour and on-campus housing for the summer (valued at $50/night). CAs are paid weekly on Fridays.

Compensation for Summer Conference Assistant Supervisors includes hourly wages of $16.50/hour and on-campus housing for the summer (valued at $50/night). CA Supervisors are paid weekly on Fridays.
