Graduate students may be eligible for federal financial aid at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ. To be eligible for federal aid programs, students must:

How to Apply

To apply for any of the federal student aid programs, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (). To complete a FAFSA students must obtain an . The FAFSA should be submitted at least four weeks before the beginning of the semester the student is applying for financial aid.

Graduate Loan FAQs

It is recommended that students consider Direct Loan and/or Direct PLUS Loan programs before applying for an alternative student loan. In some cases, direct loans may be less expensive, with fixed interest rates and various options for repayment. It is the responsibility of the borrower to determine which loan type, direct or alternative, and if applicable, which alternative loan best fits their borrowing needs.

The Direct Unsubsidized Loan is available to eligible graduate students. This loan is processed through the U.S. government. Students can borrow the Direct Loan for a specified period of enrollment and can expect loan repayment to begin six months after graduation or six months after enrollment is less than half-time (five or fewer credits). An unsubsidized loan is non-need-based. Students will be charged interest from when the loan is disbursed until it is paid off. The interest will accrue while a student is in school and/or during other periods of non-payment, and it will be capitalized. The interest will be added to the principal amount of the loan and additional interest will be based on the higher loan amount.

How do I apply for this loan?

Students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (. The Office of Financial Aid will provide you with an award notification (e-mail or mail) of the Direct Loan. The required loan applications, in addition to the FAFSA, include the Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note (MPN). These required applications can be completed online using the student's FSA ID. The FSA ID will give you access to Federal Student Aid’s online systems and serve as your legal signature.

Graduate and professional degree-seeking students are eligible to borrow through the Direct Graduate/Professional PLUS Loan Program. Students who decide to borrow this loan are required to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It is suggested that students apply for the annual loan maximum amount ($20,500) with the Direct Loan Program before applying for a Direct Graduate/Professional PLUS Loan.

How do I apply for the PLUS Loan?

The U.S. Department of Education is the lender and graduate or professional students can apply for the Grad PLUS loan at https://studentaid.gov. Approval for a Grad PLUS loan is dependent on a credit check. If approved, you must complete the to have your loan certified by the university and to have the loan proceeeds disburse accordingly.

You can borrow up to the annual cost of attendance for your degree program, minus any other financial assistance you receive (Direct Loan, graduate assistantship benefits, scholarships, etc.).

If you are not approved for the PLUS Loan, you may be offered the option to secure a credit-worthy endorser and/or appeal the loan decision with the Department of Education.

Direct PLUS Loans first disbursed on or after 7/1/2024 and before 7/1/2025 will have an interest rate of 9.08%. Direct PLUS Loans first disbursed on or after 7/1/2023 and before 7/1/2024 will have an interest rate of 8.05%. Borrowers will be notified of interest rate changes throughout the life of the loan. Interest is charged on the loan from the date the first disbursement is made until the loan is paid off.

Yes, there is a 4.228% (effective October 1, 2020) loan origination fee on all Direct PLUS Loans. The fee will be proportionately deducted from each loan disbursement before the Department of Education sends the funds to the school. Loans disbursed before October 1, 2020, have different .

When the PLUS Loan is paid to the school, you will be contacted by the loan's servicer. The loan servicer will provide regular updates on the status of the loan and will provide information on how and when to repay the loan. 

Payments are generally required on this loan while you are in school and will begin after the loan is fully disbursed for the year; however, payments can be deferred until six months after you graduate, leave school, or drop below half-time enrollment, only after the payment deferment has been approved by the loan servicer. If payments are deferred during the in-school period and/or the six-month post-enrollment period, you will receive quarterly interest statements and will have the option to pay the accrued interest. Unpaid accrued interest will be capitalized (added to the principal loan balance) at either the end of the in-school deferment or, if taken, the end of the six-month post-enrollment deferment, increasing the overall loan costs.

Alternative student loans are available to assist students in covering any financial gap that may exist between their educational costs (cost of attendance) and the amount of financial aid they are receiving. There are many types of alternative student loans and each is calculated with different interest rates and repayment terms, which vary, depending on the borrower's (and/or the cosigner's) creditworthiness. Students should review their finances to determine which financing option best fits their borrowing needs.

The Office of Financial Aid will certify any alternative student loan at the request of any borrower, provided they are approved and the amount does not exceed their eligibility for the year.

How do I select the right alternative student loan?

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ does not have a preferred lender list for alternative student loans, nor can we recommend specific lenders. However, ELM Select, a service provided by ELM Resources (see below), can assist you with what is likely one of the most important tasks in the financial aid process. ELM Select is a free online lender comparison resource that provides extensive loan options. This service has several features that will help you make the financing decision that best fits your financial needs. It also provides a wealth of information regarding borrower rights, responsibilities, and loan repayment.

NOTE: This loan application process can sometimes take at least three to four weeks to complete. Please apply early to allow for this processing time.

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ participates in the Federal Direct Loan program and does not have preferred lenders. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ follows all principles outlined in the CT Code of Conduct.

Graduate Assistantships

Many graduate departments and programs offer assistantships to their graduate students. This list is not comprehensive, and students should contact their department for more information and opportunities.

There are a limited number of graduate assistantships available to full and part-time graduate students who are fully accepted to a graduate degree program at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ.

Graduate assistants provide services to Fairfield, such as administrative, research, faculty support, and others. In return, selected students can be eligible to receive a tuition waiver and, in some cases, a stipend.

Students are limited to one Graduate Assistantship a semester.

Note that some listings below provide application instructions, while others indicate that you should contact a supervisor by phone or e-mail. The availability of graduate assistantships varies by department, semester, and academic year.

The assistantship is a one-year position. The graduate assistant will work with undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities and/or temporary impairments. The graduate assistant will provide administrative support for the office, including the coordinating of exam scheduling and note-taking services, and assist with general office reception and administrative tasks.

Exam Scheduling & Notetaking Services

Graduate assistants provide services to the Dolan School of Business, such as administrative and faculty support, professional development, internship support, peer advising, and other clerical duties for the academic year. In return, graduate assistants receive a stipend disbursed twice: once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester.

The graduate assistantship entails working closely with the director of internships and professional development and Dolan staff to organize, publicize, and implement functions relative to the office. A successful candidate must have an interest in career development and in working with fellow students.

Graduate assistants receive the same training in general career development issues and will perform some of the same duties. The following are areas where candidates can expect to benefit from and build their resume. Assistants will gain experience in:

Counseling/Training

All graduate assistants will be trained to present and develop career-oriented workshops, critique student resumes, and counsel students. They will also guide fellow students on internship and job search strategies, as well as using Stags4Hire.

Event Planning

Graduate assistants will develop, organize, and implement special events. Some key events may include Wall Street Basics, Marketing MIXer, Etiquette Dinner, Sophomore Symposium, Week of Service, and special on-campus speakers. They will also communicate with alumni, faculty members, and staff and will publicize special events to students.

Training is provided. Enthusiasm, dedication, problem-solving ability, and creativity are required. Computer skills are a plus. Positions are loosely defined to allow the graduate assistant to contribute to developing her/his position.

The Jones-Zimmermann Academic Mentoring Program, funded by a grant from the Marie & John Zimmermann Fund, is an after-school program focused on academic success and social/cultural enrichment for middle school (6-8) students from Cesar Batalla School in Bridgeport. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆundergraduate students work in a 1:2 ratio with students in grades 6-8 to provide homework support and mentoring. The program will be offered in partnership with the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse every school day from 3:30-5:30 pm. Afterschool time will be split between tutoring/homework help and enrichment activities.

The program will also include periodic field trips, both to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ’s campus and an off-campus location.

Graduate Assistant Coordinator Position

The JZ-AMP Graduate Assistant Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the program’s operations. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Training and supervising Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆU undergraduate mentors
  • Coordinating homework help and tutoring program (on-site)
  • Liaising with staff from Wakeman Boys and Girls Club and teachers from Cesar Batalla School
  • Monitor the progress of Cesar Batalla students through data collection

The Graduate Assistant Coordinator will report to the Associate Director for Community-Engaged Learning in the Center for Social Impact at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ.

The position offers a $3,600 tuition credit each semester and involves 12 hours/week for 15 weeks per semester. The program coordinator must be on-site at Wakeman Boys and Girls Club at least 3 days/week from 3 pm to 6 pm to assist in program operations. The remaining 3 hours are for administrative tasks and can be completed remotely or on campus.

The Fredrickson Family Innovation Lab is accepting applications for a graduate assistant for the 2023-2024 academic year. The graduate assistant will work in the Fredrickson Family Innovation Lab and greet and assist visitors in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines. The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences runs the Adrienne Kirby Family Literacy Project to enhance low-income children’s language skills and school readiness. As a Graduate Assistant, you will be involved in training and supervising the work of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ psychology undergraduates who volunteer or participate in course requirements at the Hall Neighborhood House Early Learning Center classrooms and afterschool programs in Bridgeport. Most of the work occurs on the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ campus, but the Graduate Assistant’s presence will be required at Hall Neighborhood House for five Fridays each semester.

Qualifications/Experience

Applicants must be available two to three days a week, for a total of 15 hours per week. Applicants must be available on five predetermined Fridays each semester for on-site visits to Hall Neighborhood House. Individuals must be able to make a two-year commitment to the position. Additionally, the Graduate Assistant must have a valid driver’s license by the time the position begins.

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts is seeking a graduate assistant to assist with the following responsibilities:

The graduate assistant will work with faculty to help in the classroom setting in terms of supporting course delivery, grading student work, leading study groups, or facilitating learning activities. The assistant might also support special projects within the Egan School and faculty research projects. A graduate assistant will be matched to an instructor based on their clinical, technical, computer, and research skills. Self-initiative and a good work ethic are important. Strong computer skills are essential. The assistant must be able to work independently and operate as a team member with the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies.

Qualifications:

Must be admitted to one of the Egan School Graduate Programs.

The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ Mathematics Center seeks a graduate assistant to support individualized and group tutoring sessions in calculus and introductory statistics courses. The appointment is for the full academic year 2024-2025, 15 hours per week, including the final exam period.

Responsibilities:

In addition to leading group tutoring sessions in Explorations in Math (MATH 1015), Precalculus (MATH 1011), Calculus (MATH 1016, MATH 1121/MATH 1122, MATH 1145/1146 and MATH 1171/1172) and Statistics (MATH 1017 and MATH 2217), the graduate assistant may be involved in tutor training, leading review workshops, and other administrative duties for the Mathematics Center.

Qualifications:

The position is open to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ graduate students enrolled in 2-3 courses per semester (both fall and spring), with preference given to those in the Mathematics program or the 5-year Education in Mathematics program. Previous experience in tutoring calculus and statistics is expected. Students enrolled in fewer courses per semester may be considered for a reduced award. The stipend may also be divided between two graduate students, one per semester.

Responsibilities

The Writing Center is currently accepting applications for a graduate assistant for the 2023-2024 school year. Applicants should be flexible, dynamic, and engaging, as well as organized and detail-oriented. Primary responsibilities include one-on-one tutoring, small group tutoring, peer mentoring, event planning, and organizational activities related to writing center administration. The graduate assistant must be conscientious and considerate while supporting the success and general well-being of both graduate and undergraduate students, as well as undergraduate tutors. Desired qualifications include experience with project administration and event planning; promotion, social media, web development, mentoring, tutoring, and staff development.   • Collaborates with the Director of Programming and Operations, and additional Quick staff, to create a strategic plan for engaging audiences both from the campus community and the broader Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆCounty community to encourage diverse and inclusive engagement for all.
  • Work with staff to implement the 2024-25 marketing plan
  • Email management – oversee copywriting with Marketing/Communications interns, enter content into Wrike system, and manage editing process.
  • Develop student audiences through niche marketing

  • Assist with creating publications, both electronic and printed
  • Provide general administrative work assistance
  • Assist with representing our programs at campus functions (i.e. major/minor fairs)
